Flora early 1940s painting
2009 limited edition prints available
Jim Flora Art has released a limited-edition, archival-quality fine art print of an uncirculated, untitled early 1940s Flora painting. The work, which depicts an inscrutable panorama of disconnected facial features, headless quadrupeds, and someone's nightmare of a fanged horse, is casually referred to as White Block Quadrupeds to differentiate it from other untitled Flora works. The original was painted in tempera on a thick rectangular block of wood the artist had first swathed in a coat of white. The stylized figures echo a number of motifs common to the artist's work in the period 1942 to 1944, after he was hired by the Columbia Records art department. (An early pencil sketch of the work appears at the bottom of this page.)|
Only twenty-five (25) prints of White Block Quadrupeds were produced for this edition. Each print is numbered in the lower right corner beneath the image and authenticated on the reverse with the stamped seal of Jim Flora Art LLC (a Flora family enterprise). We have sold print numbers 22/25 thru 25/25, and are now offering numbers 20/25 and 21/25 for $175 each. Prices will increase for subsequent prints as the edition depletes.
Produced by Flora archivist Barbara Economon with state-of-the-art digital technology, the prints have been meticulously crafted and painstakingly replicated from a high-resolution scan of the the original block. All elements of the artist's work have been retained, including faint pencil outlines. Some digital restoration was required to eliminate a series of dents (presumably not intentionally inflicted by the artist) which impacted the image. However, minor aging artifacts which do not detract from the overall impression were retained for the edition. In addition, because the original work was unsigned, a compatible Flora painted signature from 1943 has been added below the active art to officially "brand" the work.
The image area is 6-3/4" high x 11-1/2" wide — the exact size of the original work — and centered on a sheet 11" high x 17" wide. The unframed prints are on heavyweight (310g) mould-made William Turner stock, a natural white, 100% rag paper with a fine toothy surface manufactured by Hahnemühle, who are renowned for premium-grade archival papers. The edition was produced on an Epson 3800Pro large format printer using Epson UltraChrome K3 Pigment Ink Technology, resulting in brilliant, velvety color and offering excellent longevity and durability.
The print will ship flat, securely packaged and guaranteed against bending or dents. Print includes a detailed, custom-printed one-sheet with instructions for the proper care of this fine art reproduction.
White Block Quadrupeds has not been previously reproduced, published, or exhibited. Due to the fine art print's higher-resolution process, as well as superior paper, inks, and quality control, the colors in the print appear brighter, crisper, and more vibrant than the online image. Online color appearance may vary slightly depending on your monitor settings.
